Gruber acted as the driver for Anthony Sothcott during the attempted kidnapping of Nicholas Roerich. He was shot and badly wounded by Tanj Dezense, then killed when Sothcott dragged his body alongside his car as he attempted to escape and then dumped him from the moving vehicle.
